Code notes

Doors and floors in a Manitoba building

Since January 1, 2024, Manitoba has enforced the 2024 Manitoba Building Code, which adopts the National Building Code of Canada 2020. Four of its rules matter for doors and floors.

  1. A rating covers the assembly

A fire-rated door is tested to CAN/ULC-S104 with its frame, hardware and closer, and installed to NFPA 80 (Articles 3.1.8.4 and 3.1.8.5). More on fire-rated doors.

  2. Suite doors close and latch

Doors between suites and public corridors sit in a fire separation, so they need a self-closing device and a latch (Articles 3.1.8.13 and 3.1.8.15). More on suite entrance doors.

  3. Sound is rated on assemblies

The code asks for STC 50, or ASTC 47, around each dwelling unit and sets no STC value for doors; a door's figure comes from a laboratory test of the whole assembly (Articles 5.8.1.1 and 9.11.1.1).

  4. Composite wood carries a label

Flooring and doors made with composite wood can fall under Canada's formaldehyde emission regulations, which call for a bilingual compliance label (SOR/2021-148).

These notes follow the 2024 Manitoba Building Code, which adopts the National Building Code of Canada 2020 with Manitoba amendments, as checked in October 2026. Article numbers are those of that code; none of the cited articles is amended in Manitoba. The designer of record and the authority having jurisdiction decide what each project needs.

Questions about construction materials

  • What construction materials does QUIX Group supply?

QUIX Group supplies flooring, interior doors, suite entrance doors, fire-rated doors and fire exit doors for projects in Winnipeg. They are made in our group's own facilities in Turkey (TRIA). Builders, developers, property managers and contractors can request a quote with their drawings or a door schedule.

  • Who makes your doors and flooring?

Our doors and flooring are made in our group's own facilities in Turkey (TRIA). QUIX Group, based in Winnipeg, supplies them here and answers questions about each product.

  • Which of your doors are fire rated?

The suite entrance doors and the fire-rated doors we supply carry a fire rating, stated on a Canadian certification label from ULC, UL or Warnock Hersey. Our fire-rated doors page shows where each rated door goes in a building. For a fire exit door, tell us whether the opening needs a rated door, and we confirm what our production can supply.

  • Why are no fire ratings or STC values listed on this site?

QUIX Group lists a fire rating or an STC value only once its listing or test report is on file. Until then, the label on each fire-rated door states its rating, and the label details are available on request.

  • Which building code applies to doors and flooring in Winnipeg?

Building permit applications in Winnipeg made since January 1, 2024 follow the 2024 Manitoba Building Code, which adopts the National Building Code of Canada 2020 with Manitoba amendments. The designer of record and the authority having jurisdiction confirm what each project needs.

  • How do I request a quote for a building?

Send your drawings, a door schedule or a list of quantities through our contact page. We confirm what our production can make for the project and reply with a quote, saying which of the documents you asked about are on file.
