Thermofoil kitchen cabinet doors
One film, formed to the door.
A thermofoil door is MDF covered with a vinyl film that is heated and vacuum-formed to the shape of the door, so the face has no joint. It suits even colour on profiled doors, kept away from strong heat.
Thermofoil
What a thermofoil door is
Thermofoil, also called rigid thermofoil or RTF, is a PVC film. The door is first routed from MDF; the film is then heated until it softens and drawn onto the door by vacuum, so it follows every profile of the face. The film comes in solid colours and in wood grain patterns.

How it is made
Because the colour is a film formed over the door rather than paint, it runs evenly over the whole face, into the routed profile and over the edges.

Questions about thermofoil doors
What is a thermofoil cabinet door?
A thermofoil cabinet door is an MDF door covered with a vinyl film that is heated and vacuum-formed onto it. The film follows the shape of the door, so a routed profile is covered with no joint on the face.
Is thermofoil the same as PVC?
Yes, thermofoil is a PVC (vinyl) film, also called rigid thermofoil or RTF. The name describes how the film is applied: heated, then formed onto the door.
Can thermofoil doors go next to an oven?
Thermofoil is more sensitive to heat than many door materials, so doors beside an oven or a range need care. A heat shield between the appliance and the cabinet protects the film, and toasters or coffee makers should not sit right under the doors.
How do I clean thermofoil cabinet doors?
Clean thermofoil doors with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then dry them. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents, and wipe up steam and spills near the dishwasher.
Can a thermofoil door have a shaker look?
Yes, a shaker outline can be routed into a single MDF door and covered in thermofoil, so the door looks framed without being built from five pieces. The film runs over the routed edges in one piece.
